The Importance of Independence
It's July 4th. It's not the day where we were officially our own country, but rather decided that the government of the King of England had no power over us. It's incredible because it is the power of thoughts and principles of individual freedom succeeded over monarchical government.
Over the past week, our former oppressors have continued to see the fallout from Brexit, a moment where the people of the UK voted for individual sovereignty against the European Unionization of their country. The media is trying their best to tie everything to xenophobia, which is mere virtue signaling and reveals their lack of understanding of markets. But the true lesson to take from Brexit is that denying the rights of an individual to peacefully reject the structures of government and cultural oppression is tantamount. When you reject this, there are consequences.
In 2016, America is continuing down a "Remain" path culturally. The left has dominated the conversation on college campuses about different points of view. By dominated, I mean used Marxist deconstructionism to get to their true goal of everything meaning nothing in objective reality. This doesn't lead to a Marxist revolution, it leads to the demonization and oppression of the minority at the behest of the sterile majority.
We continue to see the dismantlement of rights with the second amendment, where politicians apply word games against originalist language yet refuse to apply the same logic to things like abortion. Yet a majority of the country is still pro-2nd Amendment and abortion is, as most things should be, based on state laws.
This dismantling of constitutionally protected rights has led to something else to we need to remain wary of: the changing definition of "rights". We've progressed to a place where rights mean whatever the majority in congress decides. Not only is this dangerous to the minority, it is dangerous to the current majority as once power is granted to government, it is nearly impossible to take it away.
Which brings me back to the most important individual right, and one which informs all others: individual sovereignty. Without this, freedom of speech and association cannot exist. Economic freedom cannot exist. And choice becomes irrelevant. What those on the left and populist right fail to realize is that the removal of this choice will doom their own chances at happiness. This 4th of July, let us remember that the only reason we are able to celebrate is because we have the right to choose. Let us not let it slip away due to fear, threats of the majority, and collectivism.
